2020 in Review and 2021 on the Horizon

2020 will be remembered as a crazy year of massive change and upheaval in the world. At the start of the year, local news was dominated by a looming water crisis caused by a crippling drought. COVID was still something affecting people in China.

2020 will be remembered as a crazy year of massive change and upheaval in the world. At the start of the year, local news was dominated by a looming water crisis caused by a crippling drought. COVID was still something affecting people in China.

Although we were not able to do any field work, the professional and CAD staff were able to continue working productively through the whole of lockdown. This enabled us to weather lockdown reasonably well.

Being able to start field work again under level 4 was a huge relief for everyone – something to break the monotony of sitting at home! Although getting all the paper work in order and hoping that vehicles would not be impounded was a constant concern. Not to mention adjusting to working with a mask and reaching for the sanitiser every 5 minutes.

COVID has had a huge impact on many sectors and businesses, and NPM Geomatics was not immune. In order to “stay in the game”, we were forced to offer a number of staff the option of temporary lay-off or retrenchment.

Although a difficult time for us all, what was remarkable was the spirit in which everyone engaged with the process. We had worked together, struggled together, laughed together, and then we cried together.

And so, the last quarter of this year has been one of adjusting to another new normal.

Lockdown and the subsequent economic slowdown forced us to take a hard look at our systems and processes and to start making essential changes to how we ran our business.

Remote working, cloud computing, increased autonomy, together with rethinking of our business models and strategies, were some of the changes we which we launched into and quickly adapted to.

What has not changed is our focus on being flexible and responsive to our client’s needs and deadlines.

Since lockdown we have had the privilege of working on some interesting and demanding projects, with very tight deadlines. Working through the night or over weekends, to help our clients achieve their targets, is what we do.

From industrial surveys, to topographic, water, sanitation and road surveys, to boundary disputes, subdivision, servitude, sectional title and control surveys, NPM Geomatics has remained focussed on serving our clients throughout the Eastern Cape.

We are very grateful to our many clients who have given us such a range of interesting and exciting projects to be part of this past year and we look forward to new projects which will form part of our services in 2021.
